Me doctoré en Biología Molecular de Plantas en Texas A&M University. Realicé dos posdoctorados en EUA y me incorporé en el IPN desde el 2005. En el CIIDIR-Sinaloa ubicado en Guasave, Sinaloa inicié desde entonces con el laboratorio de Ecología Molecular de la Rizósfera, adscrito al Departamento de Biotecnología Agrícola. Actualmente estudio la interacción tripartita entre una bacteria, un hongo fitopatógeno y la planta del maíz. Proponemos un mecanismo de biocontrol de la bacteria actuando directamente sobre el hongo y en conjunto con maíz alertando el sistema de defensa vegetal para juntos protegerse contra el hongo. Este es un trabajo de frontera en el área de la interacción microorganismo-planta. También estudio la micorriza arbuscular (presido la Sociedad Mexicana de Simbiosis Micorrízica, SOMESIMI). Esta interacción se da entre raíces y hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) y he estudiado los mecanismos moleculares de la simbiosis y del transporte de fósforo y arsénico (As). Para As propusimos un mecanismo de exclusión del As en la micorriza arbuscular actuando como un biofiltro y permitiendo que las plantas toleren concentraciones altas de As. Usamos secuenciación masiva para estudiar la diversidad de los HMA asociados a diversos cultivos. En proyectos de Problemas Nacionales colaboramos estudiando maíces y frijoles nativos y como se asocian con HMA en zonas milperas de Veracruz. Un objetivo de mi laboratorio es generar bioinsumos agrícolas y conservar la diversidad microbiana generando colecciones bacterianas de la rizósfera de diversos cultivos (~16, 000 especímenes a -70C). Al 2024, tenemos en puerta un formulado de Bacillus como bacteria de biocontrol de la fusariosis en maíz capaz de disminuir tanto la enfermedad como la presencia de toxinas fúngicas en maíz y aumentar la producción de grano. En 2017, me otorgaron el Premio Sinaloa en Ciencias como reconocimiento a mis aportaciones y productividad académica en el área de Ciencias Naturales y Exactas.
