Se desarrollan líneas de investigación relacionadas con la presencia de biotoxinas producidas por microalgas y sus efectos sobre los organismos de importancia comercial. El estudio de los florecimientos de fitoplancton nocivo en la zona costera, incluyendo lagunas costeras y estanques de cultivo de camarón, forma parte de las investigaciones que se realizan en el Laboratorio. Con el propósito de contribuir a la investigación de la producción de toxinas por el fitoplancton y a la prevención de riesgos de salud por el consumo de moluscos contaminados con ficotoxinas, se lleva a cabo un programa de monitoreo de la calidad del agua y de los niveles de toxinas paralizantes en moluscos en la bahía de Mazatlán. Se cultivan microalgas de agua dulce, salobre y marina, nutritivas y productoras de toxinas para diversas aplicaciones.
