Durante mi formación académica (Biología, UNAM 1987; Maestría, CICY 1992; PhD, Texas A&M U 1996) me interesé en la bioquímica y biología molecular vegetal. En mi doctorado y en mi primer posdoc (The Noble Foundation) trabajé con genes de rutas de biosíntesis de metabolitos secundarios. Posteriormente me interesé en estudiar interacciones microorganismo-planta, tal como la simbiosis micorrízica arbuscular (2o.posdoc, BTI/ Cornell). Ya como investigadora en el IPN, me he enfocado a estudiar la respuesta de la defensa inducida por micorrización contra patógenos foliares, utilizando como herramientas principales el análisis transcripcional, microscopía y bioinformática, entre otras. En mi otra línea de investigación hemos identificado bacterias de suelos agrícolas de la región como antagonistas a fitopatógenos. A la fecha contamos con una cepa con potencial para el control del moho blanco en frijol. La mayoría de las tesis de mis graduados (4 doc, 25 MC, 11 Lic) tratan sobre alguno de estos dos temas. Además, colaboro con colegas de otras instituciones, por lo que algunos de mis productos de investigación se derivan de estas colaboraciones. Mi trabajo de divulgación de la ciencia lo he enfocado en presentaciones a escolares de todos los niveles, desde niños de primaria hasta jóvenes universitarios. Además, trabajo activamente como revisora de proyectos y artículos científicos, doy clases de maestría y conferencias a audiencias diversas. Por otro lado, desde hace 17 años soy la Decana de mi centro, por lo que tengo la responsabilidad de: coordinar los procesos de elección de terna para director cada 3 años, resguardar la memoria histórica de mi centro, y fortalecer la identidad institucional. Derivado de esto, he dado presentaciones sobre identidad institucional y escrito artículos de carácter histórico. El nombramiento de Decana, además de honrarme, me ha dado la oportunidad de servir a mi institución de otra manera, complementando mi trabajo de investigadora.
